Where the Rubber meets the Road

Ok
I've had a reality check
Went to buy pants and a top yesterday - a rarity - I hate shopping for clothes!

Gotta face mirrors that tell a story I'd rather not hear
*grin*

Anyway, eager to do my part in the "Free Tibet" crusade, I cruise into the manager's office at Edgars to ask if any of their stuff is made in China.

He seems unsure
So I say "Don't worry, I'll check labels myself, thanks"
I choose an armful of gear to try on.

An unfavourite thing to do

(Don't you wish you could just leave all the stuff that doesn't fit on the floor and just walk out?!
Honestly?
Isn't it the WORST having to put them all back on their irritating hangers?!)

After clambering in and out of numerous items, I find THE jeans

Yay!
I can head home.
But wait...check the label

NOOOOoooooo!

But yes . . .
Made in China - and yes, it was Kelso, Edgars brand!!

Oh MAN!

I dumped the jeans,
told the manager what I'd discovered
and about the global internet "boycott Chinese" effort -
shame, he looked quite shocked!

Then, feeling Sherlock Holmes-ish, I wafted around Edgars to see what else was hiding its Chinese origins, noting what I found in me little pink notebook.

First, I discovered not ALL Kelso stuff is made there, but a lot is.
Also Stone Harbour range
And Free2bu range (ironically!)
Also, unexpectedly, some Jeep goods.
There may be others

(You have to look at the little fabric tag that is sown into a seam to find the country of origin. They do not make it easy.)

I leave Edgars empty handed and miffed.

On to Woolworths
The place of pretty expensive but supposedly quality stuff.

I found that the Woolworths brand is put on clothing from various places, but a lot (specially jerseys and jackets) are made in China.

I had to look long and hard to find non-Chinese pants, trust me.

I could feel myself beginning to rationalise the situation (some of their stuff is GREAT and I really wanted it!)
But so far, I have resisted

I know - it sounds incredibly "kugel"
Allie makes the great sacrifice!!!


And laughable really - just one person, not buying Chinese.
But imagine if there were millions of us . . .

The power of ones!

Exciting that the response all over the world is increasing - ordinary people willing to stand up and be counted.
The Olympic torch run is being threatened in a significant way.

And people of substance and "names" getting involved: Hiliary Clinton urging Pres Bush not to go to the Olympics opening ceremony; the French Pres was the first (as far as I know to take a strong stance on this); Bishop Tutu is joining Richard Gere in a protest rally in San Fransisco.

Just pray that the international pressure will mount up to be irresistable.

And besides its a reminder of happy shopping trips in the days when I was unhindered by the stuff going down far away.

I get so annoyed at all the "made in China" labels that for a good few years now I have been aware.

It started when I was looking for items to take back to SA from the USA which were AUTHENTIC. What a problem. China everywhere. A better "made in China" quality than we know but made in China non the less.

My best was finding a Houston football long sleeved shirt just Roy's size. Dragged it all the way back home and discovered it was made in Swaziland. We all had a good chuckle.
