Recently the level of petty crime here has increased, probably because of the amount of building going on.
Plus the fact that a house in the neighbourhood had burnt down, becoming a target for looters.
They caught a guy actually carrying away the hot water cylinder from the house on his shoulder.
The cops said they couldn't prosecute him because they couldn't prove the cylinder wasn't left on the pavement outside the house.
???????????
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HUH?
Anyway.
Everyone in the street was encouraged to buy a two-way radio - about 20 people responded.
We had to familiarize ourselves with the emergency procedures - that was fun - kinda American Wild West vibe:
Check MM in mean mode:
Calling out the posse!
Within hours of our all getting our radios, we heard a laptop had been stolen from a nearby house.
Because of the radio contact among the residents, 14 people could respond and had surrounded the culprit at the railway station until the cops pitched up to arrest him.
Yeeeeehaa!
Postscript: MM was at the squash courts this evening and apparently our
small town is agog with the news of the arrest and how effective the two-way radios are.
I can see how they will multiply all over the valley very soon.
It should make it a no-go area for the criminal element pretty soon.
Maybe. . . .
