Dolphin Moments

Yesterday DH and I were having our early morning coffee on the deck, idly watching two kayakers out in the middle of the bay. Suddenly a school of dolphins came around the point and into our bay - about 15 of them. That is beautiful enough - I don't know about you, but dolphins are utterly my favourites. They seem somehow to be more than just animals, don't you think? And I find it incredible and almost mystical that they love humans. Anyway, what was even more beautiful to watch was that the dolphins changed their course, and began to duck-and-dive in their dolphin way, right up to the two guys in their kayaks. Close enough for them to touch - The guys were transfixed, motionless - probably could hardly believe what was happening all around them. The group frolicked around them for quite a while, before moving off in their joyous way. I know how we felt, just seeing it from a distance - What those two guys must have felt!

Shew - I would have LOVED to see that! Haven't seen Dolphins in AGES - since I moved out of home actually.

Have you ever read The Hitcher Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy? That book's take on Dolphins is so funny.
They are super intelligent beings and they escape earth at some point, leaving only a note saying "So long and thanks for all the fish"!...ha, ha. I always think of it when anyone mentions Dolphins.
Random!

Wow! i love dolphins... i want to swim with them one day, but the closest I've been is on a dinghy (dingy?) out in the ocean and stopping while a whole pod frolicked around us... Unforgettable...

I have been lucky enough to have had a close encounter with dolphins in the Red Sea about 13 of them - huge atlantic spotted and plain bottlenose, we swam together for about 15mins, I was on SCUBA, I battle to even talk about it, it was soooo special.

Oh wow that must have been so amazing. I wish I was in one of those kayaks...but getting me there on the open sea...nah! Much to scared.

Hubby and I were once walking along Robberg (Plett) beach, and stopped to look out to see (was evening, so sky was just starting to get pinkish, when this MASSIVE school of dolphins came into site (from around Robberg Point swimming just metres off shore(we along with everyone else on the beach stood transfixed at the site) there must have been close on a thousand - it was ludicrous! (in a good way). They were racing *really* fast, the whole thing was exhilharating. We spotted what looked like two really big dolphins swimming further off shore (about 40m). After the spectacle was over (they were headed up the coast) we went back into the hotel where people were buzzing about it and there was a lot of talk amongst people at the dinner tables that night - everyone had seen it, and we heard later that the 'two bigger' dolphins had in fact been the very first killer whales (orca) spotted that close to Plett ever - and the reason for the 'aquatic stampede' is that the orcas had been trying to catch the baby dolphins straggling at the back.

Nature is beautiful, but reminds us of the old 'circle of life' if you will that we are all part of.

Still have vivid memories of it to this day. Awesome site.

Shjoe! It is clear that dolphins strike a deep chord in most people's hearts, hey?

Ness, what an experience! A thousand! Going flat out!
Does it get any better than that?!

Jo - I can understand that it would be hard to talk about an experience like that: it must have been deeply moving.

Rambler - that must have what the two kayakers felt like. You ARE lucky!

Kate - thanks for the tip - will look out for the book!
