Baby Safe?

I took these pics at a local church. For those who don't know what it is, its a safe place to dump unwanted babies. As you can see, there is a big notice on the outside wall to alert possible "customers" to its presence: around the corner is the actual little door to be opened to deposit the baby inside. Complete with details about what to do and how it works (if you click on the pic, you can read the writing) It is rigged up so that the baby will be fetched within 3 minutes of being left. I don't know if these baby safes are found all over the world or whether we in SA, have the dubious distiction of being the only country to need them. I'm torn between two emotions - well, I have lots - but two main ones: 1. I'm so grateful that someone is doing more than shouting about abortion and is giving trapped people a way out that does not involve killing their babies. And that those children will grow up having a chance in life because someone will take care of them. And then: 2. What sort of world are we living in that needs a "bin" for thrown away babies?

OMG - I have NEVER seen that before! That is quite shocking! Good too, otherwise babies would land up in dumpsters - but so sad! As a mother myself, I simply cannot comprehend the deperate plight that these mothers must be in to throw their babies away!
An interesting, thought provoking post - can I steal it?

Shoo, for a second, I though I may burst into tears...

This is a post that cuts a deep groove in my soul.

I have a personal story that I may have shared with you in person - but I shan't share in this forum. Save to say that this churning in the pit of my stomach is telling me rather a place to put the baby into safe hands than being abandoned and left to die.

A place like this truly is tragedy averted.

I'm so sorry Frank!

I didn't think of your story when I posted this.
Very thoughtless of me. .

What sort of a world indeed. But thank the Lord that there is a place where mothers can place their "unwanted" babies secure in the knowledge that they will be cared for by someone who does want them. Rather that then them being flushed down a toilet or left in a sewer pipe? Horrid, but great post Allie.

Awful. Amazing. I too am torn. So grateful, and yet so saddened by it.

I haven't seen one of these before, but in our city there are places where Mother's can take their babies and leave them without penalty of abandonment. It's SAD that we need them, but it's good they are there for many reasons.

Thank you for sharing, Allie!

Hugs, :-) Susan

Hiya Allie

That's not thoughtless at all... speak soon.

Thanks for putting up something to making us think about the difficult decisions some people have to make.

Working in Inner city missions...this is so great. There is a great need in our city for something like that, then maybe less babies will be found dead. Yes we live in a broken world, in a country that have a broken social services departement and at the end of the day it is the Christians stepping up to the plate to make a difference.

I feel torn as you do, but at the same time what a refuge for a mom in trouble to go. Well done to that church.
